Natures Soldiers and the War on Global Warming
Natures Soldiers and the War on Global Warming
All the living beings are dependent on trees in some way or the other. The strength, structure and endurance of trees make them beneficial for the environment, Trees not only support life, but also remove various kinds of impurities from the atmosphere.
It’s no secret that trees help the environment, but you may be surprised by all the benefits that planting trees can provide. This article lists some of the ways planting a tree can save the world - one oak tree at a time.
At the top of the list, trees are nature\'s soldiers in the fight against global warming. As they feed
themselves, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in the form of carbohydrates. The stored carbon remains locked in the tree, keeping it out of the atmosphere - and out of our environment. Since carbon dioxide is one of the most common greenhouse gases, planting trees can help combat the greenhouse effect. In fact, it is said one mature tree can absorb approximately 22 kilos (or 48 pounds) of carbon dioxide each year
Besides producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide and contaminants from the air, trees have many other social, economic, and environmental benefits.
Additionally, trees provide habitat for birds and other wildlife. Trees reduce urban runoff and erosion by storing water and breaking the force of rain as it falls. Some reports say that 100 mature trees can reduce runoff caused by rainfall by up to 100,000 gallons!
In urban areas, trees also absorb sound and reduce noise pollution - a particular bonus for people who live near freeways and busy industrial centres. Some research suggests that a well planted group of trees can reduce noise pollution by up to 10 decibels.
Additionally, trees shade asphalt and trees, limiting the “Heat Island” effect. In the winter, trees can act as windbreaks for your home and will help you save on heating costs. The Journal of Horticulture claims that saving on heating costs can reach as much as 25 percent!
From a social perspective, can you imagine your community without trees?
